NYPD Social Media Marketing Campaign gone Horribly Wrong

On Tuesday afternoon, the NYPD (New York Police Department) launched their very own social media marketing campaign (even the po po are getting involved with social media marketing). They encouraged users on Twitter to tweet using the hashtag #myNYPD:

“Do you have a photo w/ a member of the NYPD? Tweet us & tag it #myNYPD. It may be featured on our Facebook.”

The campaign was launched to encourage engagement and promote the friendliness of New York cops. However it wasn’t exactly long before there was a backlash amongst Twitter users, and behold; social media at its best!

Users tweeted a series of photo’s displaying NYPD’s police brutality, from ‘neck massaging’ to old fashioned baton smashing, below are a few of the most retweeted photo’s.

In general, NYPD recieved a lot of negative publicity for this social media marketing campaign, with most users using the hashtag to mock the @NYPDnews account. However dispite the hatred and abuse they recieved, there was still evidence that the strategy wasn’t completely unsuccessful, with happy New Yorkers posing for photo’s with their favourite neighbourhood cops.
