The Top 10 Emojis Of 2015
So, 2015 was arguably the year of the emoji ????. What is an emoji you ask? Well if you’ve been living under a rock for the last year ????, it is a small digital image or icon used to express an idea or emotion in electronic communication ????.
The word emoji derives from the Japanese ???????? words picture character, and apparently, according to our sources at Wikipedia, the similarity in English between “emotion” and “emoticon” is purely just a coincidence.
Twitter decided to do some research among their 320 million users – 15 million of which are in the UK – to conclude the top ten most used emojis on their social media network in 2015. The most popular emoji of the year was the famous ‘Face With Tears Of Joy ????’ – arguably the new lol and my personal favourite – used an astonishing 6.6 billion times over the course of the year.
This emoji is so popular, that the Oxford Dictionary has recently named it the Word of the Year. Yes it isn’t a word, but according to the genius at Oxford who came to this conclusion…
“…The cry laughing emoji was chosen because it was the most used emoji globally in 2015. [Mobile technology business] SwiftKey identified that the cry laughing emoji made up 20% of all the emojis used in the UK in 2015, and 17% of those in the US.” ????????????
Moving on from that absolute calamity, if you want to know which other emojis came up in the top ten, then look no further:
