10 Curious Facts about Twitter

So you probably are aware by now, that we kind of like social media a bit too much here at iSocial UK. In particular our unhealthy relationship with Twitter (what?!? You don’t follow us!?!).

One of our favourite YouTube channels is the famous AllTime10s channel. 10) A fake tweet temporarily wiped $130 billion off the stock market in 2013. It claimed President Obama had been injured in a White House explosion.

9) The first tweet was sent in 2006 by co-founder Jack Dorsey and said, “Just setting up my twttr”. Twttr was an early name for the site as was FriendStalker for Friendster.

8) In 2009, Daniel Knight Hayden became the first person to be prosecuted for tweeting. He wanted a ‘war’ against the US government and threatened to cut cops’ heads off.

7) #NowThatchersDead led many to think Cher died, when in fact it was actually the first British female prime minister. Just as unfortunate, #Susanalbumparty was used briefly to promote Susan Boyles album.

6) It took 3 years, 2 months and 1 day for the first billion tweets to be sent. Today over a billion tweets are sent every 48 hours.

5) Twitter can predict fly outbreaks, according to a study of 167,995 tweets. Tweets relating to the illness were used to identify outbreaks in 9 out of 11 cities.

4) Twitter is currently estimated to be worth $30 billion. It has never made a profit, and in 2013 reported a loss of $645 million.

3) 50 Cent made $5 million after encouraging his Twitter followers to buy stock in H&H imports. 50 Cent part owned the loss making business.
2) 33% of internet users in Saudi Arabia use Twitter actively – more than any other country. Only 11% of Twitter users in USA use the social media networking site daily.
1) Dutch porn star Bobbi Eden, promised to pleasure all of her 100,000+ followers if Holland won the 2010 FIFA World Cup…unfortunately for her fans, they lost in the Final.
