A Social World Cup

Congratulations to Germany on winning their 4th World Cup against Lionel Messi’s Argentina (did he really deserve player of the tournament?). We saw some great examples of brands incorporating the World Cup into their social media strategy, in particular the infamous Suarez incident.

Our favourite social media strategy over the course of the World Cup, was Adidas’ creative Brazuca ball. Adidas sponsored the World Cup football with their very own Twitter account of the football tweeting from his point of view. Not forgetting Rihanna’s social media marketing team getting pictures of her at the World Cup with winners Germany, along with her footballing opinions tweeted over the course of the World Cup, “@Rihanna: Man they know better than to give Suarez that much room bruh!”

Overall it was a very successful World Cup, both on and on the field, with a joint-high number of goals scored than in any other World Cup and a total of 672 million tweets during the tournament #WorldCup2014.

With just under half of those coming in the group stages of the competition.
No surprises for the the most popular players mentioned on social media ranking from:

2) Lionel Messi

3) @luis16suarez

4) @Cristiano

5) @OfficialARobben

Over the course of the World Cup Final, there were a total of 32.1 million tweets – more than any sporting event – tweeting during the Word Cup Final on Twitter. The peak moments were when Mario Gotze scored the goal with 556,499 mentions and then again when the final whistle blew with a total of 618,725 mentions.

Here are the top 5 social media moments during the World Cup:

1. The full-time whistle; Germany crowned World Cup champions for a fourth time.

2. Mario Gotze scores the only goal of the game in extra-time.

3. Lionel Messi’s 120th minute free-kick goes flying over the bar in the last minute of extra-time.

4. Lionel Messi awarded the competition’s Golden Ball award after the match, but many disagreed with the decision.

5. Gonzalo Higuain’s disallowed goal just 21 minutes into the match.

Take a look and relive the World Cup on Twitter:
