5 Ways Digital Marketing Can Save Greece

Over the last 3 years, Greece has been in the press for all of the wrong reasons. It doesn’t matter why or what should have been previously done to prevent this. What matters is Greece getting on the road to recovery and being known for it’s wonderful tourist attractions compared to its current negative light in the media.

Marketing is simple. Show people what they want to see (considering you are targeting the right audience).

The best advice I ever received, was to stick to what I’m good at, and excel in it. This is exactly what the Greek government needs to – with their tourism!

Greece is arguably one of the most historic and scenic locations in Europe – with great weather. Tourism is by far their biggest export, so this needs to be used to their advantage to help get them back on the road to recovery. Below are 5 digital marketing strategies that can help achieve this, by communicating all of the above and more!

 1) Twitter Trends

A worldwide promoted Twitter trend can be used to communicate the happiness and optimism surrounding Greeks, but most importantly the memories of every single person that has been positively impacted upon their a previous experience/s visiting Greece.

A simple trend in the form of #LoveGreece, with people tweeting their experiences and overall reminiscences of their trips to Greece, can be a great way to communicate the countless attractions Greece has to offer.

WHO TO IMPLEMENT: The Greek general public and tourists visiting or who have visited.

2) Snapchat

There are two ways Snapchat can contribute to encouraging tourism in Greece. Firstly is the inclusion of filters around popular tourist attractions, that encourage users to share their photos/videos with their friends and family.

Secondly is a sponsored Snapchat story. Sponsored Snapchat stories are one of my favourite forms of paid media, as it provides a genuine insight into people’s lives and gives creativity to the user.

Thirdly, individual brands (i.e tourist spots and hotels) utilising their own Snapchat channel, encouraging their customers to engage with them and providing a behind the scenes insight into daily activities, communicating their USP’s.

All are great forms of word of mouth marketing, the strongest form of marketing!

WHO TO IMPLEMENT: Everyone! Greek brands (including tourist spots and hotels) and the general public!

3) Google Adwords Hijack

Fairly straightforward, but an extensive budget will be required compared to the other ideas suggested in this post nonetheless.

Google AdWords is obviously a great way to target keywords and drive specific traffic, but this needs to be done to the right pages! Pages that communicate all of the great benefits of visiting Greece, the amazing hotels, the historical sites to visit and all the things that make Greece great.

Airline companies and hotels need to hijack the negative words/phrases associated with Greece in the press to create awareness about the fantastic benefits of visiting Greece has to offer.

WHO TO IMPLEMENT: Airline companies and hotels.

4) Sharing Photos On Social Media

The quickest, simplest and cheapest form of content to create on social media is easily photos! Everyone owns a phone with a camera, with almost a maxed out internal memory (or is that just me?).

Photos, photos, photos! Happy, beautiful photos will be able to communicate the fantastic tourist attractions and USP’s (unique selling point) Greece has to offer compared to the rest of western Europe.

WHO TO IMPLEMENT: The Greek general public and tourists.

 5) Utilising Periscope

For those of you who are relatively unfamiliar with Periscope, it is basically the equivalent of Face timing to your followers. A great new social media app to join the social media space, which has been a popular fit with a real mix of brands already.

Utilising Periscope will be the strongest digital marketing option there is for Greece (in my opinion) as it provides a real-time video feed from a mobile phone. If used correctly, this can provide the greatest most valuable form of insight into the true benefits Greece has to offer.

WHO TO IMPLEMENT: Tourist attractions, popular destinations, hotels.
